The places you and I love and what we can do to protect them.
ALERT! Right now the government wants to change the why and the how of the Conservation Act. At present we, as the public, through conservation boards get a say in how our public lands are used. The proposed changes not only open public lands to ‘disposal’ (for commercial use) but also places that sometimes irreversible decision in the hands of one person — a Minister who reflects the thinking of the day. Our forests, mountains and rivers deserve a more thoughtful approach.
Denniston Plateau (drilling for coal), Te Kuha (open-cast coal mine), Waitaha River (damming), Reefton native forest (coal), Victoria (gold), Te Waahīpounamu (gold and coal — this is a world heritage site), Mt Aspiring (tungsten), Coromandel (gold), Rotorua (lithium) to name a few.

Conservation Map
Sixty percent of our conservation land is at risk. This map shows you which areas, which MPs represent them, and how those MPs have voted on the environment. Click a place you love — their contact details are on the right. Phone users: turn your screen horizontal. Below the map is what I’m learning as I dig into the politicians’ claims about why this land should go.
